The Putting Drill Used By Tour Players

This lesson is going to help those of you who tend to miss-hit their putts.

The problem
Many recreational golfers miss-hit their putts, either by hitting the ball off the toe or the heel of the putter.

Why is this a problem?
Miss hitting the ball, when putting, gives an unpredictable amount of force and spin off the clubface. Rectifying this will make your putting more consistent and will also improve distance control and speed management.

The solution
Here’s a simple drill to help you make contact with the centre of the clubface more often:

  1. Stand approximately one and a half putter lengths away from the hole, on the green (you can vary this distance depending on your ability). I suggest a straight uphill putt for this drill.
  2. Line your putter up so it’s pointing in the direction of the target.
  3. Place a tee a couple of millimetres outside each edge of the putter. So, put one tee just on the outside of the toe, and one tee just outside of the heel.
  4. Place a ball right in the centre of the two tees.
  5. Simply putt the ball into the cup without hitting either tee. The contact should feel nice and soft off the centre of the putter blade. Practice doing this a few times.

If you were to hit the ball off either the heel or the toe of the putter, then the blade will come through and strike one of the tees. This will indicate that that ball wasn’t going to hit the centre of the putter face.

I hope you enjoyed this lesson. Practicing this simple drill will improve your ability to strike the ball with the centre of the clubface.
