You’ll Be Blown Away How Much Better You Strike It When You Recenter Properly

For many golfers, shifting pressure in the golf swing is misunderstood. They hear that they need to move into the trail side, shift back to the lead side, and get the divot forward, but the timing of that movement is often where things go wrong.

Some players shift too far off the ball and never recenter. Others slide excessively because they are trying to shallow the club or move the low point forward. The problem is that pressure shift, body mass, rotation, arm position, and clubface all have to match. If one piece is off, the rest of the swing starts to compensate.

In this post, we’ll break down why recentering matters, how the timing of that move changes based on swing speed, and why pressure, rotation, and clubface control all influence the quality of your strike.




The Role of Recentering in the Golf Swing

Recentering is the movement of pressure back toward the lead side before the downswing fully begins.

A lot of golfers think the backswing is simply a move into the trail side, followed by a downswing move into the lead side. That is too simplistic. Better players often start moving pressure back toward the lead foot before the backswing has finished.

The timing of that move can vary.

Faster swingers often recenter earlier. Some may already be moving pressure back toward the lead side by first parallel. Mid-speed players may do it closer to lead arm parallel. Slower or more gradual swingers may be able to recenter later, closer to a 45-degree point in the backswing.

The important point is that recentering is not the same for every player. It is dictated by swing speed, backswing tempo, sequencing, and what the player needs to deliver the club properly.

If you swing fast and wait too long to recenter, you may get stuck on the trail side. If you swing slower and shift too early, you may get too far forward and lose the ability to create height or speed.


Breaking Down the Elements of Better Pressure Shift

To improve this pattern, there are three key pieces to understand.

First, your pressure and your body mass are not always in the same place. A golfer can look like their body is still back while their pressure has already moved forward. This is one of the biggest misconceptions in the golf swing. Players often look at where the body is and assume that is where the pressure is, but that is not always true.

Second, the divot can move forward in more than one way. A lot of golfers are told they need to shift forward to move the low point forward. That can be true, but it is not the only solution. Rotation can move the divot forward. A later push into the lead side can move the divot forward. Handle lean can move the divot forward. A more closed or better-organized clubface can also encourage the player to lean the shaft and compress the ball.

Third, pressure dictates how much you can rotate. You are not going to rotate effectively while stuck on your back foot. Pressure needs to move forward so the body can turn through the shot. But if the arms are already pulled down too much before the pressure shift happens, the golfer may feel like they cannot rotate at all.

This is why the matchups matter. Arm height, hand path, clubface, pressure shift, and rotation all influence each other.


Practical Exercises for Better Recentering

To train better recentering, you need to understand what problem you are actually trying to fix.

Not every golfer needs the same pressure feel. A player who sways off the ball and stays back needs something different from a player who slides excessively and gets too far forward.

The goal is to find the right timing and amount of pressure shift for your swing.


Drill 1: Speed-Based Recentering Drill

Setup: Take your normal golf posture with a mid-iron. Make a few rehearsals at your normal tempo and pay attention to when your pressure naturally wants to move back toward the lead side.

Do not start by forcing a big slide. Start by identifying your natural rhythm.

Execution: Make a backswing and begin shifting pressure back toward the lead foot before the backswing is completely finished.

If you have a fast backswing or fast overall swing, feel the pressure begin to recenter earlier, around first parallel. If you are more mid-speed, feel it closer to lead arm parallel. If your swing is slower and more gradual, the recentering can happen slightly later.

Once the pressure begins moving forward, allow the body to rotate through the shot.

Tips: Do not confuse recentering with swaying. Your body mass does not need to slide dramatically away from the target and then dramatically back again.

You are looking for a subtle pressure shift that prepares the body to rotate and deliver the club.

Drill 2: Pressure Forward, Body Back Drill

Setup: Take your normal setup and make a backswing. At the top, feel like your pelvis and upper body are still in a strong, athletic position, not swayed outside your trail foot.

Your pressure, however, should feel ready to move toward the lead side.

Execution: From the top, push pressure into the lead foot while keeping enough upper-body depth and tilt behind the ball.

This helps you understand that pressure can move forward without your whole body lunging forward. The pressure goes into the lead side, but your upper body does not have to slide excessively ahead of the ball.

Then rotate through and let the club deliver.

Tips: If you get too far forward, the ball may come out too low. You may then instinctively back up or add loft to recover. If you stay too far back, you may struggle to rotate, move the low point forward, or compress the ball.

The goal is pressure forward, body organized, and rotation through.


Why This Improves Contact and Low Point

Many golfers who struggle with strike are trying to fix the wrong piece.

They are told to get the divot forward, so they slide. Then they get too far forward, hit the ball too low, lose height, and start backing up. Others stay too far back and never recenter, so they cannot rotate properly or move the low point forward.

Better contact comes from the right blend.

The pressure needs to move forward enough to allow rotation. The body needs to stay organized enough to create height and space. The arms need to be positioned so the pivot can deliver them. The clubface needs to be stable enough that the player is willing to lean the shaft.

If the face is wide open, most golfers will not want to lean the handle forward. They will instinctively add loft or flip the club to find the face. If the face is better organized, forward shaft lean becomes much easier to create.

This is why low point control is not just a pressure issue. It is also a rotation, handle, arm, and clubface issue.


Commit to Better Matchups

If you struggle with staying back, sliding too much, low ball flights, poor compression, or inconsistent divots, do not assume the fix is simply “shift more” or “turn harder.”

Find out what your swing actually needs.

If you shift off the ball and stay back, you need to recenter earlier. If you slide too much, you may need more rotation or better arm and clubface matchups. If your divot is too far back, the solution may be pressure, rotation, handle lean, clubface control, or a combination of all four.

Use the Speed-Based Recentering Drill to match the timing of your pressure shift to your swing speed. Then use the Pressure Forward, Body Back Drill to feel how pressure can move forward without your whole body lunging at the target.

The goal is simple: recenter at the right time, apply pressure into the lead side, and rotate through with the clubface organized.

When those pieces match, the swing becomes easier to control. You can move the low point forward, create better compression, and strike the ball more consistently without relying on excessive slide or last-second compensation.
