This Wrist Move Adds 20+ Yards To Every Shot!!

Are you unknowingly losing 20 yards on every shot? One of the most common – and most misunderstood – swing faults among amateur golfers is casting. It’s a subtle move that robs you of shaft lean, adds unwanted loft, weakens your strike, and kills compression. Worst of all? Most players don’t even realize they’re doing it. In this post, we’re going to break down what casting is, why it hurts your game, and how you can use tech (like the HackMotion sensor) to fix it for good.

What Is Casting – And Why It’s a Problem

Let’s start with the basics. During the golf swing, the clubhead traces a circle around your body. In a proper swing, the downswing arc becomes narrower than the backswing – this is a sign of lag, which leads to more shaft lean and better compression at impact.

But if you’re casting, the opposite happens: the clubhead moves away from you early in the downswing, widening the arc. This early release adds loft to the club, reduces shaft lean, and leads to weaker, higher, and shorter shots.

Compare this to elite players: at lead arm parallel, their clubhead is closer to their body than it was in the backswing – not farther away. This creates a compressed, powerful strike.

The Tech-Backed Fix: Using HackMotion to Train Shaft Lean

One of the most effective tools to help fix casting is the HackMotion wrist sensor. It provides real-time feedback on your wrist angles and helps guide you into a better downswing sequence.

Here’s how to use it:

- Set up the Casting Drill in the HackMotion App

- Open the app and navigate to the casting drill.

- Choose the live mode to get instant feedback as you move.

- Address to Top of Swing

- Swing to the top of your backswing. The app will prompt you when it’s time to continue.

- Train the Transition

The goal here is to decrease the angle (narrow the arc) in your downswing. This brings the clubhead closer to your body and creates lag.

If you cast (widen the arc), the app will display a red screen – giving you immediate feedback that your move was incorrect.

Avoiding Fake Lag: Keep the Lead Wrist Flat

A key mistake many golfers make when trying to create lag is cupping the lead wrist (adding extension). While this may look like lag, it’s actually “fake lag” – it opens the clubface and leads to weak, rightward shots (for right-handers).

Here’s what to do instead:

- Focus on hinging the trail wrist more, while keeping the lead wrist flat.

- This movement narrows the arc without opening the face – and HackMotion will guide you by flagging any excessive cupping.

Practice Tips: Build Real Lag, Not Looks

Use the app’s data page to track your reps. Your goal: repeat the movement where your downswing is narrower than your backswing, without cupping the lead wrist.

Try this sequence:

- Slow rehearsal swings, focusing on a wide-to-narrow motion.

- Smooth half-shots to feel the compression.

- Review feedback and aim for “green” numbers on the screen, which indicate proper movement.

You’ll know you’re doing it right when:

- The strike feels solid.

- The ball launches lower with more speed.

- You start hearing that satisfying “crack” off the clubface.

Why This Matters

Fixing casting isn't just about swing aesthetics. It’s about unlocking true compression, distance, and control – without swinging harder. So many golfers try to gain distance by increasing speed, but the real secret is lag and shaft lean.

By eliminating casting, you:

- Get the club in a better impact position.

- Compress the ball more effectively.

- Hit straighter, longer, more consistent shots.

Final Thoughts

Casting might be stealing distance and control from your game without you even knowing it. But with the right understanding and feedback – like what you get from the HackMotion sensor – you can train your swing to develop real lag, not fake lag, and finally start compressing the ball like a pro.

If you're ready to make a real change, I highly recommend checking out HackMotion. It’s like having a coach watching your wrist angles in real time – and it's one of my go-to tools for remote coaching.
