The One Transition Move That Will Transform Your Swing!

For many golfers, getting the arms stuck behind the body in transition can make the downswing almost impossible to recover from. The club drops too far behind, the path gets too far from the inside, the body hangs back, and the player is left trying to save the strike at impact.

This usually happens when the arms work down too early from the top. Instead of the body shifting and rotating first, the hands and arms get pulled behind the player. From there, the club can get overly shallow, the attack angle becomes too shallow, and the golfer struggles to strike down on the ball properly with irons.

In this post, we’ll break down why the arms should stay up longer in transition, how body rotation helps the club shallow correctly, and how a resistance band drill can help you build a better downswing sequence.




The Role of Arm Structure in Transition

A good transition is not just about dropping the club behind you.

Many golfers hear that they need to shallow the club, so they let their arms fall straight down from the top. The problem is that this can make the club too shallow too early. The arms get stuck behind the body, the pressure stays back, and the golfer has no room to rotate through impact.

When the arms drop too much, the sequence is usually out of order. The arms move first, the upper body reacts second, and the lower body arrives too late. This often leads to poor contact, blocks, hooks, thin shots, and irons that are swept rather than compressed.

A better pattern is to keep the arms feeling higher for longer while the body starts the downswing. The lower body shifts pressure into the lead foot, the body begins to rotate, and the club naturally starts to lower and shallow.

This gives you more room. Instead of dragging the arms down into your trail pocket, you allow the body to lead and the arms to work more in front of you.


Breaking Down the Elements of a Better Downswing Sequence

To improve this pattern, there are three key pieces to understand.

First, the arms should not be pulled down too early. If your hands work sharply downward from the top, they can get stuck behind you. That may feel like you are creating a shallow shaft, but it often creates a poor delivery position.

Second, the body should initiate the downswing. The shift of pressure into the lead foot encourages rotation. That rotation helps the arms stay more in front of the body while the club shallows naturally behind you.

Third, shaft shallowing and attack angle are not the same thing. A club can shallow in transition while still being delivered downward into the ball. This is important. Many golfers think a shallow shaft means a shallow strike, but the attack angle comes from how the body shifts and rotates through impact.

If your body moves forward and turns correctly, you can have the shaft shallowing while still striking down on the ball with your irons.

This is the goal: the arms stay up, the body leads, the club shallows, and the strike becomes more compressed.


Practical Exercises for Better Sequencing

To train this, you need to feel resistance at the top of the swing.

A resistance band is useful because it makes the mistake obvious. If your arms want to drop too early, the band will pull them down. To resist that pull, you have to engage the muscles that keep the arms structured and allow the body to start the downswing correctly.

Drill 1: Resistance Band Arm-Structure Drill

Setup: Place a resistance band under your trail foot. Attach it to the club handle or grip it along with the club so the band creates downward pull as you move to the top of the backswing.

Take your normal setup and make a backswing to the top.

Execution: At the top, feel the band trying to pull your arms and club down. Your job is to resist that pull.

Keep your arms feeling up and engaged while your lower body shifts pressure into the lead foot. As you resist the band, begin turning your body. You should feel your arms stay higher for longer while the club starts to shallow naturally.

Do not try to hit balls with the band attached unless it is safe and controlled. Use it as a rehearsal tool to create the correct feeling.

Tips: The purpose of the band is not strength training. It is awareness.

If the band pulls your hands straight down, you are recreating the stuck pattern. Resist the pull, use your body, and feel the arms stay more in front of you as the downswing starts.

Drill 2: Band Feel to Normal Swing Drill


Setup:
Use the resistance band for a few rehearsals, then remove it. Take your normal setup with a mid-iron.

The goal is to recreate the same feeling without the band.

Execution: Make a backswing and feel your arms stay high for a fraction longer in transition. Shift pressure into the ball of the lead foot, then rotate your body.

As the body leads, the arms should work more in front of you and the club should shallow without being dragged behind you.

Hit smooth shots at first. Focus on the sequence rather than speed.

The feel should be: arms stay up, pressure shifts forward, body turns, club delivers.

Tips: This is especially useful if you tend to get overly shallow, stuck behind you, or too far from the inside.

You may feel like your hands are staying higher than normal. That is the point. If your normal move is to drop the arms too early, the opposite feel is often needed to create a more neutral delivery.


Why This Improves Compression

When the arms get stuck behind the body, the golfer often has to compensate through impact. The body may hang back, the club may approach too far from the inside, and the attack angle can become too shallow.

For iron shots, this makes compression difficult. Instead of striking down through the ball, the player often sweeps it, flips it, or catches it thin.

By keeping the arms up longer and letting the body lead, you create a better delivery sequence. The pressure moves forward, the body rotates, and the club has room to work underneath you.

This can create a shaft that shallows correctly while still allowing the club to descend into the ball.

That distinction matters. A better shaft angle in transition does not mean you are trying to sweep the ball. It means the club is organizing itself behind you while your body creates the downward strike.

The result is more room, better rotation, improved attack angle, and a more compressed strike.


Commit to a Better Transition Sequence

If your arms get stuck behind you, your path gets too far from the inside, or you struggle to strike down on your irons, check what happens at the start of your downswing.

You may be pulling the arms down too early instead of letting the body lead.

The goal is simple: keep the arms up longer, shift pressure into the lead foot, rotate the body, then let the club deliver.

When the sequence improves, the swing becomes easier to organize. You create more room, a better attack angle, and a stronger strike without having to force the club into position.
